Indian International Cinema Icon Award

Anupam Kher

The National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA) proudly honours Mr. Anupam Kher with the Indian International Cinema Icon Award, recognising his extraordinary contribution to Indian and global cinema.

With a career spanning over four decades and more than 500 films, Mr. Kher has demonstrated exceptional range and longevity across Indian and international cinema. From landmark performances in Hindi films to acclaimed roles in global productions such as Bend It Like Beckham, Silver Linings Playbook, and other international projects, he has consistently brought depth, authenticity, and distinction to every screen he has graced.

A true cultural ambassador, he has played a significant role in taking Indian talent to the world, bridging industries and audiences with dignity and excellence.

NIFFA celebrates Anupam Kher as a global icon of Indian cinema — an artist whose legacy continues to inspire and elevate storytelling across borders.

“I am deeply honoured to accept the International Indian Cinema Icon Award at the National Indian Film Festival of Australia. Australia holds a very special place in my heart. Ever since my first visit and filming experience here many years ago, to being on Jury of AACTA headed by Russel Crowe, I have always felt a deep warmth from its people and a genuine curiosity about Indian stories and culture. It is therefore a great pleasure to receive this award from NIFFA. Festivals like this play an important role in building cultural bridges and allowing cinema to travel across borders, languages, and communities.

I am especially happy that the festival will showcase my film Tanvi The Great. Through this story we hope to spark a meaningful conversation about the representation of people with disabilities in cinema and society. These are universal themes that resonate across cultures – in India, in Australia, and within the powerful storytelling traditions of First Nations communities as well.

Cinema has the power not only to entertain but also to inspire empathy, understanding, and change. I look forward to celebrating the incredible ability of cinema to connect us all through important initiatives like NIFFA .”

Nishtha Award (Female)

Leena Yadav

The NIFFA Nishtha Award (Sincerity & Dedication to Cinema) is proudly presented to Ms. Leena Yadav in recognition of her unwavering commitment to storytelling and her distinctive voice across genres and formats.

From her early work in television to films such as Shabd, Teen Patti, the internationally acclaimed Parched, and working with Geena Davis, Leena Yadav has consistently demonstrated a rare sincerity of purpose — creating cinema that is both deeply personal and socially resonant. Her work reflects courage, sensitivity, and a commitment to exploring complex human relationships, particularly through strong and nuanced female perspectives.

Through her evolving body of work, including her contributions to long-form and streaming narratives, she continues to push creative boundaries while remaining rooted in authenticity and emotional truth.

NIFFA honours Leena Yadav for her nishtha — her dedication, integrity, and enduring contribution to meaningful cinema.

“At a time when the world feels fractured by wars and borders, the National Indian Film Festival of Australia feels especially meaningful to me. My relationship with Australia began when I served on the jury at a major festival there, and later my film Parched travelled across the country, receiving awards and tremendous love from Australian audiences. Collaborating later with the legendary Australian cinematographer Don McAlpine on Rajma Chawal only deepened that bond. I’m also grateful to Anupam Sharma, who has consistently worked to build meaningful cultural bridges between India and Australia through cinema. It reminds me that while the world may be divided by conflict, cinema still has the quiet power to bring strangers into the same human conversation.”

Nishtha Award (Male)

Anubhav Sinha

The NIFFA Nishtha Award (Sincerity & Dedication to Cinema) is proudly presented to Mr. Anubhav Sinha in recognition of his fearless evolution as a filmmaker and his steadfast commitment to purposeful storytelling.

From his early success with Tum Bin to large-scale mainstream cinema, and later to the powerful, thought-provoking narratives of Mulk, Article 15, and Thappad, Anubhav Sinha has continually redefined his creative journey with courage and conviction. His work reflects a rare integrity — choosing not just to entertain, but to question, challenge, and engage with the social realities of our times. In an industry often driven by convention, his transition towards deeply human and socially conscious cinema stands as a testament to his nishtha — an unwavering dedication to truth, responsibility, and meaningful storytelling.

NIFFA honours Anubhav Sinha for his integrity of voice, his bold creative choices, and his enduring contribution to cinema that inspires dialogue and change.

“Nishtha is belief, trust and loyalty. An award named after such virtues is a great honour and responsibility. I bow with humility and gratitude. I thank NIFFA for chosing to celebrate my work for such virtues. I came to Australia in the late 90s to shoot some music videos and never knew I will return 25 years later for such an honour.

So looking forward to all that is organised for me there and meeting people and officials that are working towards taking the artistic endeavour of film making forward. I am elated to know of the South Asian community in Australia that patronises films from their roots like no other country in the world. Can’t wait for June this year. See you soon Australia.”
